In revealing what Tsar Nicholas II’s and Lenin’s favorite meals were, why Stalin’s cook taught Gorbachev’s cook to sing to his dough, how Stalin had a food tester while he was starving the Ukrainians during the Great Famine, what the recipe was for the first soup flown into outer space, why Brezhnev hated caviar, what was served to the Soviet Union’s leaders at the very moment they decided the...

Brigitte Reimann is a German writer from the GDR. Post-war Germany, the tragic division of the country into two parts, a new generation of young people who received a terrible inheritance from their parents and are trying to build a better country on the ruins—all of this is imbued in the author's work.

The summer of 1928 was a vintage season for a growing boy. A summer of green apple trees, mowed lawns, and new sneakers. Of half-burnt firecrackers, of gathering dandelions, of Grandma's belly-busting dinner. It was a summer of sorrows and marvels and gold-fuzzed bees. A magical, timeless summer in the life of a twelve-year-old boy named Douglas Spaulding—remembered forever in moving,...

The hero-narrator of The Catcher in the Rye is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days. The boy himself is at once too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his...

Viktor Dragunsky's stories about Denis Korablyov were first published in 1960, but children still enjoy reading them. This is hardly surprising, as today's schoolchildren are just like them. Because Dragunsky's kind, funny, and often instructive stories are...

Along the way, he is stopped by a group of locals, who are interested in the prophet's views on love and death, freedom and power, good and evil. Almustafa's laconic yet comprehensive reflections are presented in the form of parables. They not only provide answers to the...

The narrator observes how their fates repeatedly hang by a thread; sometimes she intervenes in the course of events, but always remains slightly on the...

Oksana Vasyakina concludes her autofiction trilogy, which began with ‘The Wound’ and ‘The Steppe,’ with a novel in which she attempts to unravel the mystery of her aunt Svetlana's short, almost weightless life. From small fragments of memory, a complex image emerges in which a difficult relationship with her mother, domestic instability, and indifference to her own fate coexist with an...

Critique of Pure Reason (1781) by Immanuel Kant is a foundational text in modern philosophy that investigates the limits and scope of human reason, aiming to reconcile rationalism and empiricism. Kant argues that while knowledge begins with experience, it is structured by innate concepts (like space, time, and causality) that the mind imposes on the world, meaning objects must conform to our...
