‘The Past and Thoughts’ is an autobiographical chronicle, recognized by literary scholars and historians of Russian prose as the author’s main work and one of the key literary works of the 19th century in the memoir genre. This book includes the fifth and sixth parts of ‘The Past and Thoughts,’ dedicated to Herzen’s life after leaving Russia - first in France, then in Italy, again in France and, finally, in England, which was to become a new homeland for the author for a long time.
