Das Spinnennetz [The Spider Web]

The novel's protagonist, Lieutenant Theodor Lohse, hates socialists and Jews. He begins after the First World War as a law student in Berlin and hires himself out as a private tutor at a Jewish jeweler. It is difficult for him to fit into the unfamiliar civil life. He resigns from the jeweler and becomes a member of the Munich 'Organization S II'. Lohse meets the detective Günther Klitsche, who sneaks into socialists under a false name as a spy in order to then betray them to the police. Theodor kills Klitsche, covers up the manslaughter and takes his place.
