'Successor' is a book about the Russia that could be. Mikhail Fishman chooses Boris Nemtsov as the main character, since his fate, according to the author, 'turned out to be inseparable from the fate of Russia. They started their journey together and walked along it together.' Nemtsov begins his political activities as if by accident, supporting his mother, opposing the construction of a nuclear power plant in his native Gorky. A scientist, a physicist by education, Nemtsov never aspired to engage in politics and got into it thanks to his charisma and lack of servility towards any superiors. At the same time, Andrei Sakharov, the personification of dissidence, supports him in the anti-nuclear protest. Later, Nemtsov became a confidant of Yeltsin, who in the 1990s was already strongly associated among the liberal part of the population with a free, democratic and sovereign Russia. This is exactly the kind of Russia that the people who elected Yeltsin as president wanted to see.
