‘Letters from Nowhere’ is both a book by Jonas Mekas and a book about Jonas Mekas. The very first definition that any reference book gives about him is ‘the godfather of the New York film avant-garde’. The fact that this Lithuanian-American poet, writer, director, critic and producer is much broader and deeper than any idea about him is evidenced by his ‘Letters from Nowhere’ - a series of notes on society and culture, on the land and man, on small languages and peoples. As well as the memories of friends and a critical essay on his work. At the same time, from the photographs of his friend Arunas Kulikauskas and the shots in which Mekas is captured, a visual representation of the environment and the inner world of the artist is formed.
