Rudolph Peterskhagen was a colonel in the Knights Cavalier and was gravely wounded near Stalingrad. After his recovery he was named commander of the city of Greifsvald [Neuenkirchen, Germany]. In the spring of 1945, not wanting more senseless death, Peterskhagen gave the city to the Red Army. This was the only instance in which the Red Army took a city without combat. In the early 1950's, Peterskhagen was arrested by the Americans while on a trip to West Germany. He was sentenced to prison for espionage and only released in 1955. In 1961 a mini-series was created in East Germany based on his memoirs; it was even shown in the USSR.
