The War with the Newts develops over a long period of time as a collage of newspaper clippings and other brilliantly parodied records about the miraculous Newts who learn to speak, work, and behave like humans, only lacking the ability to think creatively. Behind the seemingly entertaining and witty satire on newspaper sensationalism, what Capek considered the greatest danger to human civilization is gradually revealed. Namely, the effort to make money on everything that promises profit, even if it should immediately bring destruction. Also, the need for most people to make their lives easier, to not work if possible and just enjoy themselves, just have fun, and not think about anything that appears to be a threat to all of culture and ultimately to the existence of humanity itself.
